Abstract

The development of Marian theology within Roman Catholicism has been a rich and multifaceted process, spanning centuries and encompassing a variety of theological, devotional, and cultural expressions. This article offers a comprehensive overview of the key themes and developments in Marian theology within the Catholic tradition, tracing the evolution of Catholic thought on Mary from the early Church to the present day. The article begins by exploring the terminology and the various connotations connected to it. It then examines the origination of Marian theology and its four fundamental dogmas put forth by the Catholic Church. The article then discusses the ecclesiological development and evolution of Mariology within the major historical epochs. Finally, the article offers a reflection on the contemporary development of Marian theology, noting the ongoing significance of Mary within Catholic spirituality and practice, as well as the ways in which Marian devotion and theology continue to evolve in response to contemporary social, cultural, and theological trends.
