Abstract
This research article explores the exegetical and jurisprudential contributions of Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah, a towering twentieth-century Muslim scholar, and evaluates their enduring impact on Islamic thought. Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah, known for his pioneering work in multiple Islamic disciplines, produced significant writings in Qur’anic Tafasir and Islamic jurisprudence that reflect a unique blend of traditional scholarship and modern academic rigor. His exegetical approach, particularly evident in his French translation of the Holy Qur’an with commentary, emphasizes contextual understanding, linguistic precision, and rational coherence, making the divine message accessible to contemporary Western audiences while preserving classical interpretive principles. In the field of jurisprudence, his seminal work Muslim Conduct of State and his critical edition of early legal texts like Al-Siyar al-Kabir by Shaybani demonstrate his mastery over the sources and his ability to address modern statecraft, international law, and minority rights from an Islamic perspective. Dr. Hamidullah’s methodology is characterized by direct recourse to primary sources (Qur’an and Sunnah), careful handling of Hadith, and an innovative yet faithful application of Ijtihad. His influence extends across continents, shaping modern exegetical trends, legal reforms, and academic studies in universities worldwide. This article systematically examines his major works, analytical methods, and the reception of his ideas, concluding that he successfully bridged classical Islamic heritage and modern intellectual challenges, leaving a lasting legacy for scholars and practitioners of Islam in the contemporary world.
