Abstract

Islamic teachings on consuming halal and avoiding haram are clear. The Islamic directive in this regard is to consume only halal and protect ourselves from haram and doubtful things. Consuming haram has both external and internal harms. In earlier times, all products were locally produced, this thing was making it easy to identify halal and haram. However, since the advent of industrial development, and with food and beverages being abundantly transferred and sold from one region to another, distinguishing between halal and haram has become increasingly challenging. Although global regulations mandate that any product sold must clearly state its contents and ingredients, these regulations are only practically enforced in a few countries. In many regions, labels are present, but they are either unreadable or incomprehensible. The same approach applies to medicines, and in fact, it is even more complicated. The ingredients in medicines are often named in such a way that only someone with a medical background can understand them, leaving the average person unable to decipher them. In this article, we have outlined the Islamic rulings on common ingredients used in medicines, particularly those derived from animals. This is intended to help manufacturers or consumers become aware of the ingredients and make informed decisions about whether to consume the product based on its Islamic ruling. We have initially selected 25 ingredients for this discussion, though there are many more, which will be addressed in future discussions.
