Impacts of Orientalism on the East: Cultural and Social Changes

Abstract

The religion of Islam is a complete code of life, it completely guides a person in every matter of life, and after that, there is no need for any other religion. Allah Almighty has declared the completion of the religion: “This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed my favor upon you and have chosen Islam as a religion for you.” Since this religion is the last, that is why the bringer of this religion is the last prophet of Allah Almighty, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (ﷺ). But people who oppose this religion have existed in all ages. They have been using various tactics and methods to keep people away from this religion, one of the tactics of opposition appeared in the form of Orientalism. Orientalists are those who have studied the religion of Islam only to create doubts about the religion of Islam and the personality of the Prophet of Islam. Sometimes they are seen writing the biography of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, sometimes they are seen publishing the translation of the Qur'an and sometimes they are seen talking about a collection of hadiths. But when they are studied from an outsider’s point of view, it is understood that, in these books, they slander Islam, the Prophet of Islam, and the fundamental book of Islam, the Holy Qur’an. Social changes are observed due to the research of Orientalists and their scholarly work, the large section of the East who are called scholars or go abroad for education are quite separated from their culture and the traditions of their society. The ideas of the Orientalists reflect their ideas and thus the effects of Western culture on the East are slowly becoming prominent. This paper will cover the following topics:1.
