The Social Role of Female Educators in Establishing Peace in Contemporary Times: In the Context of the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Abstract
The primary focus of this study is to profoundly understand the role of female educators in promoting social harmony in contemporary society through analyzing the excellent role of the female companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The early Muslim women in education set significant roles in education, leadership and being responsible in imparting social morality basing women in the current society. Women, such as Ayesha bint Abi Bakr, Fatimah bint Muhammad, assumed the roles of educators, caretakers of young generations and promoters of peace and fairness in the society. Ayesha (RA), who was expert in Hadith as well as in jurisprudence, used to educate both male and females and greatly benefited the Islamic world. Like Ayesha (RA) and other Sahaba, Fatimah (RA) was not only a teacher within the confines of her home, but a social reformer too, as well as the protector and performer of jihad both for personal and public domain.Analyzing the classical Islamic sources such as “Al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah” by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, “Siyar A’lam al-Nubala” by Al-Dhahabi, and based on the modern interpretations this work focuses on the importance of the social, educational role of females under the inspiration of these legendary figures in today’s challenges, including gender inequality, violence and moral decline through their roles as educators today, female teachers are enjoined to practice compassionate, wise and to be resilient models to positively shape the society after the Islamic injunctions and Sahabiat protocols. Thus, the need for this study is a call to go back to the history of the Sahabiat in order to cause a revolution in the current generation of women educators especially those who are seeking to establish order in the chaotic world that is characterized by oppression of the innocent. Education is an important facet of woman’s social roles as prescribed under Islamic shariah that makes its work relevant to tackling many of the contemporary challenges.
